This was a fast-moving trilogy involving the sentient world of potato chips derived from genetically-altered potatoes. The story and characters are constantly changing since potato chip bags, and thus the characters themselves, have short lives. It was funny and adventurous, full of action. The author's mind had to have been constantly working in fast forward to come up with so many zany adventures for the characters. It was a farce of just about everything imaginable from King Arthur to Star Wars to 007. If you enjoy something different to read, which is innovative and imaginative, then this book is for you. It kept me laughing throughout, but I did regret the loss of Cougar. It would be nice if he was resurrected in the following adventures.Product details

This is a really quirky and fun adventure story about the lives of packets of crisps after their expiry date. There are some great details, i.e. the flavor of the crisps influencing their character. I think this book would appeal to all ages, as long as you've got a good sense of humor!

I wasn't altogether sure what to expect from Michael Diack's The Super Spud Trilogy. Before starting it I told myself this book would be one of two things imaginatively entertaining or unspeakably cheesy (insert obligatory nacho reference here). A book about the secret lives of potato chips? Really? Yes, really. The Super Spud Trilogy is an amusing, witty and original set of tales, guaranteed to make you look twice the next time you browse the snack aisle at your local grocer. Sure the brightly colored packaging is a little misleading but all things considered so are crisps packets so let's not get hung up on the details.
The Super Spuds are a race of genetically enhanced potatoes that come to life inside their foil wrappers. Once past their expiration date the spuds can enjoy a whole host of activities, assuming of course they survive long enough to do so as they are a remarkable vulnerable species - nearly any activity can end in sudden and immediate death. Perhaps it is my morose sense of humor talking, but I found this concept to be a particular highlight of the book.
I am all for character development, but am totally fine with sacrificing it for a laugh. Take Colin for example. We really don't to know him as well as Cougar or King Martin. It is sad that Colin perishes so swiftly, but it is the nature of Super Spud existence and comparatively speaking, Colin was lucky to have lived as long as he did. Personally I would have liked to see he story expire when he did. A swift and abrupt ending would have emphasized his vulnerability not to mention the fact that it would have elicited an amused if morbid chuckle from yours truly.
Some have commented on the level of violence in the book. I can't argue outright, there is a lot of it, but need I remind you we are talking about potato chips? You'd bust a gut laughing if I threatened you with a push pin! Lighten up people. You laughed at Looney Tunes and those characters threw 1000 lb anvils and ACME dynamite!
Humor doesn't make up much of my usual reading material but I am glad to have had the chance to experience The Super Spud Trilogy. Michael Diack has created something wonderful in the Super Spuds and look forward to their future adventures.

Cover A simple but all together interesting cover that reminds me of potato chip wrappers that are in the book. The color and large text draws you in. A very nice cover.
Summary The Super Spuds are magical potatoes created in a lab under all monitored circumstances. They even go as far as cutting them into slices with a diamond dust blade, and carry them around with haze-mat suits on. When they are sprinkled with their seasoning it creates their personalities, example spinach and Steak flavor has a military/hero complex. Without giving too much away you will meet Collin, Cougar and King Martin three very lovable characters. This is a very humorous book that will always keep you guessing.
My Thoughts When I first picked this book up I was a bit skeptical to what I was going to find , and was pleasantly surprised how drawn I was into the story. The creation of the super spuds is fantastic I love how all the elements come into play. My favorite character of the three main ones in Cougar, a fun loving spud who has many glorious adventures with many friends. The characters are one of a kind, as is all this book. Pure originality. Humor isn't my cup of tea when it comes to reading but I will be happy to read this one over and over the same with more super spud stories when they come out. I would recommend this for anyone. An awesome and highly entertaining read.

This is a very creative and humorous book about the humble potato crisp that is transformed into something magical by genetic engineering. The special abilities of the crisps develop while hidden within their airtight packets, and fully mature after the date of expiration comes due. With arms, legs and personalities as disparate as their flavorings, the crisps embark on a series of adventures. Unless they follow the rules of survival, they will die as any human would. A delightful and imaginative read!
