The Egyptian people felt betrayed as they witnessed how other nations advanced while theirs fell behind. Their disappointment in the performance of their government ignited the 2011 revolution. While still in the aftermath of their celebrations, their revolution was stolen, yet hope never eluded them.
Inspired by those events, Noran Omar Shafey weaves the themes of betrayal, loss and hope into her debut novel.
Baraweez, the Egyptian colloquial word for frames tells the dramatic stories of three Egyptian women portrayed in frames on Nanna’s side table which she reveals to her granddaughter.
Farida is betrayed while seeking true friendship; Sagy fights back to get her stolen son; and Soha never gives up hope on finding true love.
These three stories are set within the story of Nanna, Salma and their family going about their daily lives in Alexandria in the midst of fast-paced political upheaval, unrest and uncertainty during the January 25th 2011 revolution.

I found myself embarking on a journey through Baraweez“ Picture Frames” with every page. While reading Baraweez I lost track of time. I traveled in time. I traveled to different places. I found myself retrieving from my memory, visiting past and present settings, visiting countries and characters I don’t personally know, yet I became a part of this woven fabric. It was my personal journey and I can identify with them recounting my deeper thoughts. I was also aware that somehow I was being invited to dive into Ms. Shafey's inner thoughts and share some of her personal moments.A probing lingering question took over while I was devouring the book and it continued with every page I turned; are the picture frames there to highlight a period, a character or a country? I found the answer with the last page; it didn’t matter because they all intertwined, merged and instead of snap shots I was faced with a complete picture: LIFE.
A must read whether you are Egyptian or wanting to understand Egyptians. A must read for all generations; old and young alike.

Baraweez eBook Noran Shafey Reviews
I loved how this author wrote this book it touched my heart and also taught me something's about the events and life during and after the revolution. I think this book will be an award winner🏆 Toffee
A great book which translates the view of a talented and well focused writer. The writer succeeded in making her point clear in all three stories through her simple vision and easy to read style. She was very detailed and attracted the reader to read as all her stories were experienced in real life. I did enjoy reading it twice and I'm very thankful to be one of the very first to purchase!
Initially I was curious about what is Baraweez is all about, Baraweez means “frames” in the arabic language; so what she, Noran Shafey, is talking about !!?? Soon enough I got what her book is all about and why she brilliantly chose this name for her book. it is a window to other people's lives and what they went through. it is sad yet a fact of life that is happening everyday without notice but lots of agony and suffering to the beholders. So yes, you should read Baraweez, for sure the author, Noran Shafey , nailed it. I recommend this book not just to all women but also for men to read and somehow connect and get some ideas about the women suffering in their daily lives. a big thumb up. Baraweez
"A book that magnetized my eyes to its every page, from the very first letter to the very last, Baraweez, the Egyptian colloquial word for frames, the debut Novel of a well-regarded magazine editor, Noran Omar Shafey.
The story follows two women, a grandmother and her grand-daughter, where the grandmother passionately narrates to her beloved grand-daughter the stories behind the frames of three Egyptian women, the morals of which were reminiscing those of the then-ongoing 25 January revolution they were living through at the time. The first frame weaves the theme of betrayal, where Farida learns the hard way that blind trust is a perfect instrument for betrayal and destruction. The second frame weaves the theme of loss, where a loving mother Sagy went to war and conquered mountains to retrieve her stolen son. The third and final frame weaves the theme of hope, where Soha never gives up hope on her quest to find her true love.
Quite the dramatic trip through its every page, this book is what I would define as literary superiority. And reading it through the course of days, everytime I picked the bookmark to mark where I last read was a moment of regret because I yearned to know what happens next . The first frame blew my mind, the second one warmed my heart and the third one spoke to my soul. The way every story was told compelled me to picture myself in their shoes, feeling their pain and their every emotion. Truly incomparable!
A must-read in every perceivable proportion, this book is a masterful mix of real life events and fiction, a beautiful ride that will send your mind to places and your heart to emotions that you will never, ever forget." - A review by Ibrahim Khalaf.
Baraweez delivers an authentic and genuine perspective of the typical ties within Egyptian Families.
The reader is taken on a colorful journey of different emotions and endeavors.
In the second chapter Noran supplies -excellent in depth analysis- of a family's roller coaster freelings when their child is kidnapped.
Noran I AM anxiously looking forward to your next book!
I love this book. It gives a "being there feeling " during the spring revolution in Egypt. The optimism of the young people of Egypt, the love for their country and the hope that they had for getting a chance of changing things for the better. There are three other stories intertwined. The one I like the least is the first story, Betrayal. I find it not very convincing that a bright intelligent woman would be so totally blind to the red flags that were there about her "friend". I do not feel honesty on her side in that story. The other two stories are wonderful. They tug at your heart and make you wonder at the strength of those women in the face of such difficult and brutal events in their lives. Great first book from Noran Shafey. Looking forward to what she will write next.
Reading Baraweez was a novel experience for me.
The writer ,Noran Omar Shafey, writes in a very direct and uninhibited way. This approach to writing is unusual in the Middle East and is truly refreshing.
Furthermore Shafey is a master of suspense. Of course in the kidnapping of the child story , the story is a true story ,one would expect suspense in that kind of story but the author was able to inject suspense in all three stories which is quite an extraordinary feat !
There is immediacy and exitement throughout the book.
For people who don't know Egypt the book is also an intimate look at Egyptian family life ,the love of family;the cruelty and entitled behavior of some husbands ,the kindness of strangers etc.
Reading this book is very rewarding.
